Wallaby great Toutai Kefu has been appointed as a skills coach for the Ikale Tahi’s 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign.

Toutai, who now lives in Queensland and coaches the Sunshine Coast Stingrays in the Brisbane Premiership competition, will join the team prior to the Ikale Tahi competing in the Churchill Cup tournament being held in London during June of this year.
In announcing the appointment head coach Isitolo Maka said he was delighted to have Toutai on board “ Toutai will bring a wealth of experience to the team having played at the top international level for so long. He has been coached by the best international coaches in the business as well as having himself coached in Japan and Australia. He fully understands the Tongan way of playing rugby”.

Toutai who played sixty Tests for the Wallabies said he was delighted with his appointment. “It has been a dream of mine throughout my professional rugby career to get involved in a coaching capacity with Tonga and the Ikale Tahi after I retired from playing. To be appointed to assist Isitolo in this World Cup year is a tremendous honour. I am really looking forward to working with Isitolo and also Chairman Bob Tuckey with whom I’ve been associated since my under- age representative days in Brisbane and throughout my Queensland Reds and Wallabies career”.

Bob Tuckey commented that “of Toutai’s sixty Test matches thirteen have been against the All Blacks. He has played in every major rugby venue in the world in front of huge crowds and played in a winning Rugby World Cup final. His experience and understanding of what is required to perform at that level and in those circumstances will prove invaluable to the Ikale Tahi. We are indeed fortunate to have someone of Toutai’s stature and experience join Tonga Rugby Union”.

The Ikale Tahi will assemble in London during the last week of May 2011 for the Churchill Cup together with Canada, USA, Russia, Italy A and England Saxons.  Thereafter the Ikale Tahi will contest the Pacific Nations Cup in Japan during July followed by a two Test series against Fiji in August 2011 before heading off on the 5th September to the World Cup in New Zealand.
